Luantang Hydro Power Project, China

Carbon offset funds will enable the construction of a small, low impact run of the river hydro power generation plant in China, which represents a sustainable alternative to conventional, fossil fuel electricity generation. The project is pending Gold Standard issuance.
HOW IT WORKS
The project replaces fossil fuel electricity generation that dominates the national grid and also reduced the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). The number of households connected to the grid will also increase due to the project.As a benefit of the hydro power project, the adjacent reservoir can be used by the local community for aquaculture. The increased river depth of the project will stop the practice of fishing with electric nets.
CARBON OFFSETS MADE IT HAPPEN
Without offset funds the financial payback for this installation would not be viable. The installation will yield savings in GHG emissions compared to the traditional approach of burning fossil fuel for electricity generation. This also stands as a model for energy innovation and a switch to a lower carbon future.OTHER BENEFITS OF THE INSTALLATION
Consultation with local stakeholders and participation from local residents took place prior to the project construction, helping to bring local opinions to the process of decision making and improve local democracy.The Luantung Hydro Power project will create local and regional employment both during the construction and operational phases. Six permanent jobs will be created in the local community during the operation period, together with another 20,000 working days with training given to all staff.
Employment opportunities in the hydro power station and subsequent aquaculture will increase the income of local people and help improve the local economy.
