Granules LG biomass burner
Carbon offset funds enabled Granules LG to acquire a biomass-fired burner to produce thermal energy, with the aim of drying wet raw materials for the production of wood pellets.
HOW IT WORKS
Granules LG uses a dryer to produce wood pellets and the resulting sawdust from the process is used to fuel the biomass burner. Traditionally, these burners operate on readily available natural gas. Granules LG, however, invested in a biomass burner to generate this heat. Wood powder – a residue produced by local sawmills – is also used to fuel the burner to a lesser extent.Since CO2 emissions resulting from biomass combustion are not considered to be a net source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, real emission reductions will be achieved through the avoidance of fossil fuel with biomass as the primary energy in the drying process.
CARBON OFFSETS MADE IT HAPPEN
Without offset funds the financial payback for this installation would not have been viable and the facility would continue to burn natural gas to fuel their dryer with substantially higher GHG emissions.OTHER BENEFITS OF THE INSTALLATION
Beyond the direct climate benefits, the Granules LG biomass burner project will be a source of local jobs in the community.PROJECT AT A GLANCE Project Location: Saint-Félicien, Quebec, Canada Project Type: Fuel switching Standard: Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Credits generated per year: ~5,200 tCO2e Equivalent # of cars removed from the road annually: ~1,020 (Based on EPA GHG equivalency Calculator) Validator: First Environment Verifier: Pending Portfolio: Aimia Project Start: 2010 Project Duration: 10 years
